The 2022 second-generation Toyota GR86 was released late last year as the successor to the older model GT86, which has been in the market since 2012. Both cars share many similarities, but the new model looks better on paper and has better performance.
However, we need to look closely at both models to deduce their differences. Let’s see how the Toyota GR86 compares to the GT86.
Engine and Performance
Even though the Toyota GR 86 and GT86 have similar engine types, the new model has the edge in performance and power. The GR86 engine produces 228 horsepower and 184 lb-ft of torque. The GT86 engine, by contrast, produces only 156 lb-ft of torque with 205 horsepower.
The GR86 is also lighter and has a sturdier body frame, which makes it faster in acceleration and speed. This car can reach 60mph in 5.9 seconds, while the older model, GT86, takes 6.3 seconds using manual transmission.
Gas Mileage
The two models may have the same engine, but the GT86 has better gas mileage. This car consumes 40 miles per gallon (MPG) inside the city and 36 MPG on a highway cruise. Its combined fuel economy is 38 MPG.
The GR86, on the other hand, consumes 20 MPG within the city and 31 MPG on the highway. Its fuel economy is lower, ranking at 25 MPG. The difference in gas mileage could be because the GR86 was designed for speed rather than for fuel economy.
Safety Features
The GR86 contains more safety features compared to the GT86 and other Toyota brands. This car has traction control, an electronically-monitored suspension system, an ABS driveline and ignition disabling. It also has a remote start system and the Eyesight Driver Assist Technology for the automatic trim. Lastly, the GR86 has a Blind Spot Detection (BSD) system that alerts you when a car in another lane gets into your blind spot.
Design Features
The GR86 boasts new exterior design features that are an improvement from the previous coupe. At the front, the car comes with vertical corner air intakes, smoothly-shaped headlights, a rectangular-shaped grille and side mirrors with sharp corners. It also has air intakes behind the front wheels, a fin at the top, and a mini spoiler at the trunk.
These design features are an improvement from the GT86 model, which has fog lights instead of corner air intakes, sharply-shaped headlights, and a more rounded grille. The GT86 also contains antennas at the top and smoothly-shaped side mirrors.
The GR86 is slightly lower-slung than the GT86 and thus has less wind drag. This aids in it being faster because less air is going below the car. But despite being low-slung, the GR86 still has better ground clearance, so there is a low risk of axle damage.
Final Remarks
When it comes to performance and power, the GR86 has the upper hand. This car has more safety features but lower fuel economy than the GT86. It’s safe to assume that the GT86 was designed more for fuel economy while the new model was for speed.
