6 Reasons Why the Maldives Belong On Your List of Dream Destinations

Many people have heard of the Maldives, but few have ever actually been there. The general impression is that it is a place full of secretive safe havens where celebrities and the world’s wealthy can holiday in peace and that it is one of the few places on the planet which could be described as ‘paradise’ without exaggerating.

There is some truth to this, but the 200 inhabited islands which make up the nation have so much more to offer. This is a destination that is worthy of a place on anyone’s travel bucket list and this short article will attempt to explain just some of the reasons why.

1. The beaches

There was no escaping this one. You’ve probably seen the pictures. The Maldives is home to some of the most beautiful beaches to be found anywhere on the planet. Pure white sand and crystal clear waters are accurate descriptions, not just catchy marketing phrases.

While you’re probably imagining relaxing on these in the daytime, many visitors to the Maldives are taken aback by the beauty of the scenery later in the day too. The colour of the sunset on the horizon ranges from reds to oranges and even purples, and the lack of light pollution means that at night the beaches lie under a blanket of stars.

2. Diving

The warm, clear waters of the Maldives make it a great place for diving and snorkelling, and there is a diverse range of wildlife to see. This includes rays, turtles, barracuda, and even enormous – but friendly – whale sharks.

Colourful coral reefs can also be found all around. Most resorts offer diving instruction, and there are places to rent snorkelling equipment and waterproof cameras.

3. Spa treatments

It is not unusual to combine a holiday island resort & spa Maldives, and most of the 130 resort islands do this. Guests have already come to one of the world’s most serene locations, so why not go all the way with some pampering spa treatments to leave you truly relaxed and refreshed?

All the traditional treatments such as massages and hydrotherapy are available, and many spas also offer the latest beauty treatments.

4. Local culture

An often overlooked aspect of the Maldives is its culture, which is vibrant, unique, and interesting. Traditional dance displays are regularly performed on the beaches, and most resorts serve some of the delicious local dishes.

5. Heritage visits

Cities of the Maldives, such as Male, are where much of the nation’s best architecture is to be found.

The main religion of the Maldives is Islam, so the most interesting heritage sites are the city’s mosques. The city itself has an inviting laid-back atmosphere and is full of markets and little streets to explore.

6. Water sports

For the more adventurous tourists, there is also a vast array of water sports which can be enjoyed. Jet skis, kayaks, safari boats and more are all available to be hired, and the Maldives is also home to some world-renowned surfing destinations.

Home to one of the world’s most unique and picturesque natural environments and with a wealth of things to see and do,  the Maldives are worthy of a position on anyone’s list of dream destinations.
