Bohemian fashion has always found a place in society. The first time I had ever seen someone wearing these lovely clothes, I had seen pictures from the 1960s and 1970s, when Bohemia was a catalyst in making changes to the world. It drew me into a culture that made a statement without trying to, especially with their clothing.
When looking for boho clothing for women, we tend to gravitate toward beautifully decorative patterns and Earthy tones to ground us and connect us to nature. Though bold colors are loved as well by many in the free-spirited world, as seen here in boho clothing for women, we also look for clothing that is free flowing and comfortable.
If you notice, each pattern in bohemian styles compliments the background coloring of the actual article of clothing. This type of artistic styling is what catches our eyes and makes us want to wear these pieces for everyone to see.
The Beginning of Bohemia
The bohemian lifestyle has a rich history dating back to long before the 1960s when it became popular in everyday life. Many of the free-flowing styles came from all over Europe and Middle Eastern countries and even incorporated Native American culture as time went on.
However, the chic styling we see today started with the French bohemia lifestyle in the 18th century, where a person would dress how they wanted and not succumb to what was considered “the norm” in society, such as artists, writers, singers, and dancers. This way of life was frowned upon by many in the community and as time went on, they developed stigmas attached to them.
As time went on, this type of living and dressing became popular once more during the last 1960s in America, known as the counterculture or “hippies.”
These were a group of people who had wanted peace above all else, to live the way they wanted to live and dress in ways that expressed their personalities. They wanted to simply be free.
The clothing they chose to wear was comfortable and breathable fabrics, a different step from the tight form-fitting dresses and skirts of their predecessors.
The Beauty Behind the Fit
Each time you see someone wearing what is known as Boho, or as it is considered today as Boho-chic, you will notice that the clothing can be very plain, non-form fitting, and on the larger side.
Many pieces can include such extras as fringe or tassels. Though some may think that plain clothing deters a lot of people, it is quite the contrary as more women are choosing to wear what makes them feel comfortable and are loving their bodies through it.
In a corporate world, it is difficult to bring about this type of style without incorporating it into your daily life. You can simply begin with jewelry, such as tribal earrings or bracelets.
From a personal standpoint, many of the accessories I wear when I must dress in a more formal setting are long necklaces and rings with beautiful gemstones on them. Wearing even these small articles can bring you back into that mindset of calm and relaxed by only looking at them.
Picture this: you are at the office all day wearing your business professional clothing that is not breathable at all. You have sat in this uncomfortably tight dress, possibly with a belt around it to make it even tighter, and heels that are starting to make your feet ache. Now imagine never being able to wear anything else except this for the rest of your life.
This is the mindset that has drawn many women to the bohemian style, as these clothes are made for everyday living and never make you feel uncomfortable.
Styling the Boho-chic Look
Many of us take our styling tips from famous designers and celebrities. We are always looking to see what the latest trend is and how to make ourselves look as if we have stepped out of a magazine. The beautiful thing about boho styling is that you can style yourself however you wish, but it does not hurt to investigate tips if you are uncertain where to begin.
For example, as someone who mainly dresses in Boho clothing, I wear loose, flowing dresses that are usually patterned with florals or no pattern at all, just a bold color like orange, yellow, or purple. To add to this ensemble, I have small ankle high boots with fringe falling on the sides and will accompany this with a good amount of large jewelry or a wide-brimmed hat.
Many celebrities have also jumped onto the boho-chic train, as seen in this article: https://inspired-beauty.com/10-celebrities-who-are-rocking-the-bohemian-look/?msclkid=af4c7262b82b11ec82ee83b904efb395, wearing more of what makes them feel good and love their bodies, such as Nicole Richie. These women take their runway style and shape it with beautiful patterns, striking jewelry, and, of course, all the fringe.
With boho-chic, you can have fun with your wardrobe and try new things that you would not normally try. Ever since I started embracing this fashion, I have styled pieces together than I never would have before and in doing so, have found my confidence in myself to rock whatever I put on. That is the mindset that we should all be having; to be proud of who we are and wear it for the world to see.
